Gleanings from the Editor

There is no gift I’d rather receive than a book. Any kind of book — how-to, cookbook, murder mystery, history, almost any book is welcome. If you could see my house you’d know that; piles of books are everywhere and there are bookcases in most rooms.

So this issue is dedicated to the wonders of books — particularly books related to gardens. There are thousands of them out there. We can barely scratch the surface, but I urge you to go to your friendly neighborhood nursery or bookseller and spend some time browsing.

With the holidays coming up, you are bound to find books that will make wonderful gifts — for your friends, relatives and probably for yourself as well! And since it is almost winter (such as it is here in Texas), you’ll have time to sit down an read rather than going out to weed.

Some of the books are brand new and some are old favorites. I’ve asked our columnists and some friends to share their favorites with us. It is always fun to see what other people find interesting and entertaining.

We are also offering free seeds again this year in cooperation with Renee’s Garden Seeds. If you subscribe or renew or give a gift subscription, you and the person you give to will receive a free package of Sweet pea seeds. Now is a good time to plant the seeds in most parts of the state. If you live where it is very cold, you may want to wait until spring. In any case, this is a good opportunity to try this wonderful fragrant and beautiful flower. Last year many gardeners were surprised at how well the Sweet peas did in their garden. Others were just thrilled!

Happy Holidays.
